This is one of those, "Why didn't I think of this?" projects. Glam up your plain shelves and shadow boxes by simply gluing a frame over the top. You can of course build you own shelves with a little wood, Gorilla glue and nails to get custom sizes and a better price. Start rummaging through yard sales and thrift stores to old discarded shelves. You'll be painting them anyway, so a few scratches are no big deal.
